SPIRITUALITY AND JOB INVOLVEMENT OF PUBLIC SERVANTS IN RESEARCH INSTITUTES

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to ascertain whether the spirituality of public servants impact their job involvement in research institutes in Benin-City, Edo State and specifically determined the effect of the sense of God supervision, alignment of individual values with organizational values and the sense of contribution to the community on the job involvement of public servants in research institutes in Benin-City.

In order for the research objectives to be achieved, the study used the correlational research design which employed the survey method in which questionnaires were utilized in collecting data on the variables that were investigated. The study focused on two research institutes in Benin-City (Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research-NIFOR and Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria-RRIN). The population of public servants in the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research was 1,624 and 964 in the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria. Thus, the total population of the study was 2,588. The study used the Guilford and Flruchterformular to determine the appropriate sample size of 346. The researcher administered 380 questionnaires to the public servants of the selected research institutes but only 347 of the questionnaires were found to be valid and useable. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

The study found that job involvement is positively related to the dimensions of workplace spirituality which are sense of God supervision, alignment of individual with organizational values and a sense of contribution to the community of public servants in research institutes in Benin-City. The sense of God supervision does not significantly affect the job involvement of public servants in research institutes in Benin-City. The alignment of individual values with organizational values and the sense of contribution to the community significantly affects the job involvement of public servants in research institutes in Benin-City.
