ABSTRACT

Water quality describes the Physico-chemical, biological and radiological characteristics of water. A field study was conducted to determine the spatial variation in the Physico-chemical parameters of Owan River, Edo State. Water samples were collected from three stations of which station 1, 2 and 3 are disturbed with anthropogenic activities from November, 2020 to February, 2021 covering the dry season. A total of 23 parameters were analyzed in water using standard methods. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the mean values of the Physico-chemical parameters across the three stations except DO (P<0.05). Water Quality Index (WQI) showed that the quality of the water at all the stations was not suitable for drinking. Water pH, total solids (TS), Alkalinity values were within the NSDWQ and WHO range. Electric conductivity, TDS, DO, Salinity, Phosphates were below WHO range. Values recorded for turbidity, TSS and BOD were above WHO range. It is therefore, essential to treat water from ground water sources to make it fit for both drinking and domestic use. It is of paramount importance for government to embark on regular environmental sanitation monitoring within the study area and also provide portable water to the study area to avoid outbreak of waterborne diseases.
