ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess the concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) in Lagos state and Benue state. Secondary data were used for the assessment, levels of carbon monoxide (CO) were extracted biannually from Google Earth Engine using information from Sentinel-5P satellite data (COPERNICUS/5P/NRTI/L3_CO). A comparison of the levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in Lagos and Benue was done from the years 2021 to 2023. Results showed that the average mean concentrations of carbon monoxide in Lagos ranged from 0.05687326 mol/m2 to 0.044165313 mol/m2 with the highest concentration found in 2021 and the lowest found in 2022; which may be due to the high level of industrialization, vehicular emission and the implications results of this includes respiratory diseases, aggravation of pre-existing condition, death, damage to other organs. Annual mean concentrations of carbon monoxide in Benue ranged from 0.051727904 mol/m2 to 0.040098347 mol/m2 with the highest concentration found in 2021 and the lowest found in 2023. Creation and support of quality air monitoring systems that utilizes satellite data, such as Sentinel-5P ensuring prompt responses to deteriorating air quality, government investment in public transportation as well as other sustainable strategies to reduce carbon monoxide pollution emission levels, public transportation would help to reduce the amount of private vehicles necessary for the public thereby reducing possible resultant emissions and the implementation of urban planning and land use management are recommended.
