SPATIAL ASSESSMENT OF FLOOD VULNERABILITY IN OGBARU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ANAMBRA STATE NIGERIA USING GIS AND REMOTE SENSING

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to identify Ogbaru local land use and land cover and communities affected by flood risk, and do develop a flood vulnerability map showing of bath local flood vulnerability. The methodology include acquisition of sentinels and SPTM image covering the study area. Fem processing and reclassification and flood modelling. The image classification results related that first area accounted for the largest land cover/land use of about 56.18% with an area of 22328.54 hectares while Agricultural  land had 17.9% and an area of 6833.7 hectares bare land had 11.39% with an area of 4525.07 hectares sand dunes had 1057% with an area of 625.21 hectares and water body had 4.63% with an area of 1840.79 hectares. The results of flood mapping produce a layer showing four hazard zone namely, very highest, moderate, risk and low risk flood zones in the study area, indicating that very high risk zone occupied 13.57% of the entire study area.

Covering an area 53.92% covered an area of 5393.12 hectares, while highest risk zone occupied 26.45% covering 10513.61 hectares in medium risk zone 0.57% have built up to an area of 1072% and 180.96,cultivate land was 2.67% on an area of 64.21 and forest was 88.36% on an area of 2136.36 hectares. The results and flood risk maps generated are essential and should be used to inform resident about risk of flood in order to be prepared when flooding occurs.
