ABSTRACT
Songs of the Oppressed is a musical play adapted for stage by the researcher from the popular multiple award winning South African apartheid movie; Sarafina. This study adopted a qualitative approach through which the basic knowledge of apartheid history of South Africa was derived from the script. It delves into the significance of the songs within the context of oppression, highlighting their ability to evoke emotions, and convey protest themes from the Apartheid Era in South Africa. Songs of the oppressed shows the impact of the adaptation of the movies Sarafina in raising awareness about social injustices and inspiring positive change. Recommendations were made that Nigerian playwrights and organized private sector should embark on and encourage the production of musical scripts for stage, especially, as such scripts are comparatively fewer in circulation.
