ABSTRACT
Generally, it is acknowledged that the most important changes in Statistics in the last 50 years are driven by technology. We now live in a “data era” where the use of statistical or data analysis software/packages is inevitable, in any research field. For such reason, a study into these statistical packages would help improve research expertise, and minimize human error in data analysis. This study engages some of the most important and frequently used statistical packages, relating to their functions and distinguishing characteristics, and thereby helping users in choosing the right package for their research. The study also focused on a great number of tools available in these packages to carry out statistical data analysis. To use most of the multidimensional statistical packages, no prior knowledge of programming is required or assumed, but knowledge of basic computer skills and statistics appears necessary. This study thereby gives an insight to those basic computer and statistics skills and knowledge needed in the application of these packages. The study recommends that the use of statistical packages in various sectors should be encouraged in order to produce accurate data for decision making.
