ABSTRACT

An experiment to evaluate the polymorphism in the Progesterone Receptor Gene of 10 matured rabbit does, was carried out using 6 genotypes of rabbits in the University of Benin Research Farm. The breeds includes; New Zealand Red (n=2), Hyla (n=1), New Zealand white (n=2), Dutch (n=3), Angora (n=1), and Chinchilla (n=1). About 2ml of blood sample from each rabbit was collected from the marginal ear vein, separately into tubes that contained EDTA as an anti-coagulant, using sterile needle. Blood samples were transported to Inqaba Biotechnology West Africa LTD in Ibadan, Oyo State for DNA extraction and analysis. The results showed a total of 20 single base variations comprising of 1 deletion and 19 substitutions in the Progesterone Receptor Gene sequences in the studied animals. The results showed a deletion at position 500 for New Zealand Red, Hyla, New Zealand white and Dutch. While the substitution was from position 354 - 728 bp. From the results of the study, it is important to understand the polymorphism of this gene in rabbits as it may have implications in their breeding and reproductive success. This result gave a better understanding of the genetic basis of reproductive traits which can lead to the development of new treatments or interventions for reproductive disorders.
