ABSTRACT

Blood donation is a vital part of worldwide healthcare. It allows for blood transfusion as a lifesustaining and life-saving procedure. Despite increasing need for blood donation in medical practice, not much is known about patterns of blood donation and anthropometric characteristics of blood donors in some African populations like Nigeria. The present study was aimed in determining some anthropometric characteristics of blood donors in tertiary health institution in Benin city, Edo state, Nigeria. A total of 61 donor samples were obtained and from them, their anthropometric data was compared with ABO blood group, Serology test and genotypes. From the analysis of the various results obtained, a nuanced understanding of how demographic factors intersect with the anthropometric characteristics of blood donors was provided. These findings underscore the importance of customized donor recruitment and health education strategies to ensure a safe and sustainable blood supply while prioritizing donor well-being.
