ABSTRACT
This study offers a thorough representation, classification, and analysis of a few Edo language greeting codes. This study aims to analyze various realizations, types, and usages of greetings in relation to context, people, and occurrence. The researcher used the principles of the speech act theory and ethnography of communication to analyze the 67 greeting codes collected through discourse observation, interviews with native speakers and users, and online sourcing in order to fulfill the study's objectives. According to the study, there are various ways to greet someone in the Edo language, depending on the situation, the person's gender, age, and other factors. In the Edo language, greetings are sensitive to context, gender, age, clan, and occasion. The researcher suggests that linguists or language experts carry out a comparative analysis study on the greeting forms used in the nation's indigenous languages.
