ABSTRACT

Marriage is seen as an important aspect of culture among the Yoruba people. In the marriage process, the traditional marriage is the most crucial and recognized part of the marriage rites. The study is motivated by the need to identify and know the significance of the traditional marriage items in the Yoruba tradition. This study aims at identifying the traditional marriage process, the analysis of discourse between the groom's family and bride's family spearheaded by the two Alágas; Alága ìjóko and Alága Ìdúró. Other objective includes the influence of culture on traditional marriage process, Owó orí (bride price), and Erù Ìyàwó (bride list). The data for the study was sourced primarily and secondarily from an informant, internet, textbooks, and articles in journals. The data was collected by means of writing. The data consists of the analysis of the communicative event and well as the traditional marriage items in the Yoruba society. The informat was drawn from the Western part of Nigeria; Ìbàdàn, Oyo state. The study findings show the richness of the Yoruba culture through the influence of culture on the marriage process, practices and rites. Traditional marriage items are therefore symbolic to the lives of the couple.
