ABSTRACT
This study examined the sociolinguistic analysis of some selected folksongs of Urhobo language. Dell Hyme’s Ethnography of Communication was adopted in the analysis of the folksongs. From our findings, it was revealed that since folksongs are aspects of culture, this study has proved the inextricable link between Urhobo folksongs, an aspect of Urhobo language, in the context of English as a second language. The Hyme’s SPEAKING model allows us to analyse our data sociolinguistically and arrive at the meanings of Urhobo folksongs and their sociolingustic implication. Setting and scene take care of the physical and temporal aspects of the context of use of the folksongs.
‘End’ enables us to understand the intentions and effects of the art sequence while ‘key’ explains the tone which is serious in a greater percentage of the data.
