ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which women are been neglected in politics in Nigeria  with special interest in Edo State.

The study formulated 3 objectives and 3 research questions..

In the literature review, the study looks at empirical study of women participation in politics adopted the feminist theory as a theoretical framework. The researcher used a self-structured questionnaire as the primary research instrument to gather the necessary data for the study.  The study’s findings revealed that the barriers to women’s participation in politics ae cultural, religious, economic and educational and they ae all responsible for hindrances to an effective participation of women in politics. Therefore, the researcher recommends the dissemination of gender-sensitive information by the government and the enaction of specific laws to promote and protect the political rights of women to go for public positions in the same proportion as men.

.It is believed that the data generated from this investigation would be helpful to policy makers in formulating and implementing policies that will promote gender equality in all public and political institutions.
