ABSTRACT
It is very factual that language is essentially a means of communication. Aside this fact, language is also used to carry and store the values of a given people and proverbs constitute a great part of the values of any community or society. Proverbs are used in carrying very vital messages and information in a given society. Therefore, this work is an attempt to study the socio-pragmatic importance of proverbial expression in the Okpe language following Austin’s theory on speech act in conversation. The data for this study was collected using oral interview, which saw the researcher in the collection of a good number of proverbial expressions in Okpe, relevant works of literature are presented in the literature review, afterwards the presentation of the data, Austin’s locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act which was postulated in his speech act was used in the analysis of the data collected. A successful analysis shown to the research that the speech act is vital for the analysis of proverbial expressions; bring out the importance, settings and linguistics value of proverbs. The analysis also shows that proverbs have hidden meaning and constitute a very crucial part in the linguistic society of the Okpe.
