Summary
This study titled “Socio-Economic Determinants of Academic Performance among Undergraduates at the University of Benin” was structured into five chapters to effectively carry out this research. The study raised three objectives that guided the study. Based on these objectives, research questions were formulated, the assumptions and significance of the study were highlighted, and area of study, scope and delimitations were also discussed. Chapter two reviewed literature related to the research topic. . The review critically studied and examined the perspectives of a few psychologists, social workers, and other interested academics on the ideas, categories, and theories behind the two primary variables: socioeconomic status and academic achievement. The system theory and the theory of human capital investment serve as the theoretical framework. The study's design and methodology were covered in chapter 3. All full-time social work students at the University of Benin made up the study's population, which was based on a cross-sectional survey design. A basic random sampling approach was used to sample a total of 218 pupils. Two instruments were used for data collection, the questionnaire. The returned questionnaires were analyzed using simple percentage table. Chapter four presented the analysis of the data collected which were analyzed through the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. The analysis of the study's findings produced the following conclusions:

1. It was shown that there is a substantial inverse relationship between students' marital status and their academic performance.

2. Findings also showed that children of different genders performed differently academically.

 

3. The results also showed that there are different correlations between student academic achievement and household income. It was shown that there is a bad correlation between pupils' financial backgrounds and their academic achievement.
