ABSTRACTThe study examined socio-economic background and academic performance amongst public secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State The independent variable were parental income, family size, parental occupation, and parental educational background while dependent variable is students’ academic performance. To achieve the purpose of this study four research questions were raised to guide the study. Literature was reviewed based on the variable in the study. The research design adopted for this study was the descriptive survey design. Using the purposive sampling technique, one thousand (1000) students were selected in public secondary schools. The instrument used for data collection was a 20-item questionnaire named “socio-economic background of students and Academic performance (SBSAP) constructed by the researcher. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used as statically tool for data analysis, the result showed a coefficient of 0.75 which means that the instrument is reliable.The findings of the study revealed there was a significant influence of parental income; it was also revealed that parental occupation does not have influence on academic performance of student. Also, parental educational background and family size does not influence the academic performance of students in Egor local Government Area of Edo State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that parents with low income should be empowered to enable them provide for basic needs of their children. Thus, enhancing their academic performance. Suggestions for further research were also made.Key word; socio-economic, students’ academic performance
