ABSTRACT
In Nigeria, rape has been a serious subject of concern, with many professionals being urged to devise solutions to minimize the incidence and properly manage victims. However, before now, only a little research has been done on this area of study, but from observational information, the majority of Nigerians are involved in the acceptance of rape myths, which has had a negative impact on their responses to rape incidents. As a result, rape has become more prevalent in Nigerian society. In this regard, this focus on five objectives of the study which are socioeconomic status, sexism, gender norms, religious belief and sex role on rape myth. The survey method of data collection was adopted in order to collect quantitative data form the respondents with the aid of questionnaire. The statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was used to process the data. chi-square test was carried at 0.05 level of significance to determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variable as stated in the hypothesis of the study, which produces findings of the study. The findings shows that, socioeconomic status, sexism and sex roles significantly related to rape myth acceptance. Recommendations were offered based on findings of the study; firstly, economic and educational empowerment for both male and female; secondly, government and non-governmental organisations should embark on massive and aggressive campaigns on equally of genders backed by law, thirdly, other societal norms encouraging rape myth acceptance should be tackled; fourth, other forms of religious belief should be tackled; lastly, abolishment of sex roles should be promoted in different domains of society like school, workplaces, religious house as well as in the families.
