ABSTRACT

This study examined the socio-cultural factors influencing the usage of family planning in Ekosodin Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The study adopted descriptive research survey design in building up this project work. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents which were selected from three (3) major streets in Ekosodin Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The data collected was analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage.

The study revealed that some of the socio-cultural factors influencing the usage of family planning among couples in Ekosodin Community include cultural norms, religious beliefs, traditional laws and couples’ immediate environment. It was concluded that the most common methods of family planning among couples Ekosodin Community include the use of condom, injection, pills and contraceptive implants.

The study recommends that awareness should be raised by health professionals about the importance of family planning services on family life to each house holders. It was also recommended that schools, youth associations, religious organizations and local communities should intensify their efforts in ensuring that whole families are educated about the importance of family planning or contraceptive use.
