ABSTRACT

The study examined socio-cultural determinant of domestic violence among married couples. The objective of the study was to know the relationship between cultural factors and domestic violence among married couples, to examine the relationship between social factors and domestic violence among married couples, to find out the consequences of domestic violence among married couples and to suggest the possible solutions that would help reduce do domestic violence among married couples.

The cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. Two hundred (200) copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondents in Oredo Local Government area in Edo state. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The empirical result  revealed that socio-cultural factors can lead to domestic violence; that there are consequences that results from domestic violence and that there are possible solution that should be adopted in solving or limiting domestic violence among married couples.  The study recommends the need to increased awareness of domestic violence by government, policy makers, NGO and religious organizations through the mass media by especially the social media to create awareness and sensitize the public not just women alone to speak out against domestic violence and that the government needs to educate and sensitize community members to shun cultural practices that support wife beating and all forms of domestic violence.
