ABSTRACT

This project examined social work intervention strategies for student experiencing depression and academic problems in the University of Benin. The objectives of this work will be analyzed on the following: to examine the types of depression on academic problems among student of the university of Benin, examine the implications and effects of depression and academic problems in the university of Benin, examine the causes of depression and academic problems in the university of Benin, examine Social work intervention strategies for student experiencing depression and academic problems in the university of Benin. This study adopted the structured questionnaire as the instrument of data collection; the questionnaire was made up on twenty questions drawn from the research questions. The method of data analysis was analyzed using simple. Simple descriptive statistics such as percentage and tables.  The findings reported that Depression and suicide abuse are the leading causes of disability disorder alone accounted for two fifth of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) caused by mental and substance use disorders. Depression is projected to be a leading cause of mortality and morbidity. An estimate of 350 million people is affected by depression worldwide. Depression adversely affects functioning, fecundity and increased suffering. Research shows that mental illness among university students will have numerous effects on individuals, family and community as undiagnosed mental ill students are at risk of dropouts from academic program. The leading causes of depression includes; loss of loved ones, unmet academic performance and financial crisis. A conscious effect should be made by both parents and school managements to help students out of depression, health service should be created inside the institution for student’s awareness that even mild symptoms of depression may be associated with lower grades and how they affect the overall performance of students, the staff of the student health service should be made fully aware to the harmful effects of depression for planning different activities about health-education related to students’ problem.
