ABSTRACT

Globally, some elderly are mostly not given their full recognition and respect especially in developing countries like Nigeria as the concept of ageing has been a discourse that is attracting attention both nationally and internationally. Though life expectancy stands at 51.6 years, demographers affirmed that the members would likely double in the next 2 (two) decade worrisome is the fact that the elderly are usually affected health challenges as a result of age and health status. In this context, the elderly need to be respected and catered for both at the nations, state, local and community level. Being a vulnerable group in the human society, the elderly are mostly affected as a result of their age and health status. This study adopted the theory of disengagement theory in explaining social work intervention strategies and outcome of victims of abused elderly persons in Aduwawa community, Benin City, Edo State 300 participants were randomly selected using both qualitative and quantitative method of data collection and analysis. It was observed that through the elderly are a bit catered for, caregivers are limited by time, space and material, hence creating an enabling environment for elderly abuse and it’s therefore recommends that all concerned government agencies and well meaning individual should create an enabling environment that will care protect, provide and also standard laws and polices should be put in the place to help reduce elderly abuse.
