Abstract

This essay is a study of the Social Work intervention on the mitigation of COVID-19 pandemic in Egor Community of Edo State. The study takes inspiration from the devastation and pillage wrecked on humanity by the coronavirus pandemic. From the study, it is observed that the virus and the governmental policies that follow its curtailment seem counter-productive to the socio-economic and living standard of the people within the area of study. The primary and secondary sources of material are got from the libraries, internet and responses from 400 questionnaires distributed to persons within the study area. These materials contributed to the development of the study’s theoretical background, literature review as well the data analysis which helps us to arrive at the findings. In this study, the empowerment approach forms the main base of the theoretical background because of its relevance to individuals and families which could be viewed from the perspective of a group of socio-cultural sphere of human engagements. At the same time, the use of empirical analyses through quantitative research method got through questionnaires is adopted – to critically expose the ideas surrounding the objectives of the study, which has to do with the examination of the effects of COVID-19 and on ascertaining the roles of social worker in the course of the pandemic Finally, the findings of the essay revealed that the effects of COVID-19 on the people of Edo state range from income, lack of job opportunities, food insecurity, restricted movement, inflation, inequitable distribution of social welfare package, lack of social services for the most vulnerable in the society to lack of social workers counsel and advocacy.
