Summary
Postpartum mood disorders are characterized by an abnormal period of emotional disturbance, following children birth. This has recently begun to attract local, national and international attention. This is against the back drop of the fact that these mood disorders can make it hard for a new mother to get through the day and it can affect her ability to take care of the infant or herself which places more responsibility on the new father and other family members this has a number of far-reaching socio-psychological consequences. Several factors, among them unplanned pregnancy, marital relationship, social support, and infant risk status at birth have been implicated as being reasons why women fall into postpartum depression. From available statistics, depending on the degree of depression postpartum depression occurs in approximately 7-22% of mothers and often goes unrecognized with tragic consequences, in up to 50% of all cases. This study presents the causes, consequences and socio-psychological effect of postpartum depression on mothers and family members.
