Abstract
This study aimed at investigating social media usage and cyber-crime impact on student performance in the Faculty of Education. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The design adopted for this study is the survey research design. The sample consisted of 105 respondents (students) randomly selected from the 7 course areas in the Department of curriculum and instructional technology, faculty of education. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from the 105 (one hundred and five) respondents which were basically students. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two experts in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The test re-test method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher herself. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. 9 Findings revealed that that the time spent on social media by students influences their exposure to cybercrime. It was also revealed that social media network students are more exposed to influence their exposure to cybercrime. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Students should be educated on the influence of Social media on their academic performance. It was also recommended that Legislations against cybercrimes must be enacted and existing ones put into force to enable relevant authorities to deal effectively with offenders.
