ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to ascertain the Social Media and propagation of Gender Equality in Benin City, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were, To find out the level of exposure to social media sites by citizens of Benin City, To find out among the old and new media the one that best promote Gender equality, To understand the level of Social Media coverage of gender equality. The survey design was employed with the aid of a 17-item questionnaire to elicit responses from 399 respondents in all the streets within Oredo Local government Area, Benin City. The sample was selected using Stratified simple random sampling and then, simple random. Then, data were presented using frequency tables. Findings reveal that majority of the citizens have known and come across gender equality information on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram. .Secondly, social media is easier and faster in dissemination of information. Then, the study concludes that social media platforms can be used in the adoption and dissemination of gender equality information to the audience. Therefore, the study recommends that social media users should ensure that they use it for its intended purpose and not abusing it.
