ABSTRACT

Traffic congestion has been increase in all urban parts of the world, developed or not, and everything indicates that it will continue to get worse, representing an undoubted menace to the quality of urban life. Its main expression is a progressive reduction in traffic speeds, resulting in increases in journey times, fuel consumption, other operating costs and environmental pollution, as compared with an uninterrupted traffic flow. The aim of this work is to reduce journey times for commuters through the design and construction of a traffic light system with a diversion indication sign to inform commuters of possible over crowded traffic light junction ahead of them and advise them to use alternative routes. In this design, a PIC microcontroller gets vehicle density data from four parallel infrared proximity sensors placed at sequential positions by the side of the road prior to the traffic light junction, the controller processes this data and produces results which will act as control signals to increment or decrement the countdown value to be displayed during the countdown session. Also if high vehicle density is observed, the diversion light is turned on and oncoming commuters are advised to use alternative routes. Due to financial limitations amongst other reasons a prototype is implemented to represent the concept of this design.
