The utilization of energy is of paramount importance and cannot be over emphasized Ranging from domestic purposes, industrial use and transportation purposes which are dependent on fuel, It unarguably the cornerstone of economic and social development. However, there is energy shortage worldwide including Nigeria and this necessitates producing energy from other sources, especially from biomass. Therefore, this project work is focused on fabrication of a bio-digester and generation of biogas using cow dung.
A biogas digester comprising of a plastic, with a capacity of 30 liters was designed and coupled. The substrate (cow dung) and water were mixed and The digester was shaken at regular intervals to avoid scum formation in the digester and to allow for easy escape of the gas produced. The retention time used for this experiment was 14 days during which the daily reading of the amount of gas were taken to ascertain the amount of gas in kilogram produced. A rubber hose was connected to the digester, A gas outlet was located at the top of the digester and the other end of the rubber hose was connected to a tyre tube provided for storing the gas generated.
At the end of the experiment, it was discovered that the gas start producing after 24 hours at a low rate which then gradually increases as the day go by. Also the catalyst(yeast) influenced the gas production on a daily basis
