ABSTRACT

This study empirically examines the impact of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) on economic growth in Nigeria for a period of 25 years (1998 to 2022). The correlation coefficient and the ordinary least square (OLS) regression technique were employed in the empirical investigation. The findings from the analysis general revealed that small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) has significant positive impact on economic growth in the country. On the other hand, employment opportunities and infrastructural development have significant negative impact on the growth of the Nigerian economy in the period of investigation. The study therefore recommends among others that consistent policy measure that will continue to sustain the positive relationship between SMEs and economic growth should be developed and put in place. Also, the government and relevant policy makers in the SMEs sector should tried as much as possible to avoid formulation of policies and laws that would create disincentives capable of weakening the SMEs sector and its contributions to the overall growth of the economy. When these are done, rapid economic growth would be highly fast-tracked by SMEs activities in the country.
