SUMMARY

From a close survey of Sino – American relations, one possibility is certain; both powers are on the road to war, and sooner or later a confrontation is likely possible. The nature of relations between China and the U.S is such that rationality is most times not permitted. Both countries have come to the reality that they are in a contest for global hegemony. This contest, whether anyone believes it or not, is conflict: the simple understanding of conflict is a situation whereby both parties hold firmly to incompatible position, with no one willing to compromise its own position. What makes conflicts escalate (and most times beyond what both parties initially anticipated), is when both parties each feel they are strong enough to displace the other. This is the crux of Sino – American relations. As long as both USA and China believe themselves superior to each other, peace may not be an immediate option for both powers. China feels it is the fittest and so it is creating that atmosphere of contest where only the fittest survives. USA on the other hand believes China has made a fool of her for too long and wants to end that humiliation and threat once and for all.
