Abstract
The study investigated the single-parent and its effects on the academic. performance of undergraduate students in the University of Benin. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between single Parenthood and academic of undergraduate students in the University of Benin, Benin City.
Descriptive survey research design was employed. A total of 400 students who attend the University of Benin were randomly selected to obtain data, Personal data forms were used to collect information on their age, sex, religion, level of education and the type of home. In this study, the instrument used was the questionnaires – which consists of parts of section A and section B.
After carrying out the analysis, the summary of the research findings established that; The impact of single parenthood on students’ academic performance in the University of Benin range from time and attention, financial strain, emotional support, role models and social and peer relationship; The relationship between parenting styles and student academic performance are authoritative parenting, authoritarian parenting, permissive parenting and uninvolved/neglectful parenting; The influence of parental involvement in the academic performance of undergraduate students range from adequate academic guidance, comfortable study enivornment, accountability, moral support, communication. The study recommended that Single parents should maintain open and honest communication with their children; Seek out local resources and programs that offer academic support, tutoring, and scholarships for single-parent households; and also; Single parents should help their children develop good time management skills to balance schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and family responsibilities.
