ABSTRACT

This research critically examines the Green Revolution initiative spearheaded by President Shehu Shagari in Nigeria during the 1980s, focusing on its implications for food security in the country. The study addresses the persistent challenges of food insecurity in Nigeria by evaluating the effectiveness and lasting impact of the Green Revolution policy. The study employs a qualitative research methodology to provide a comprehensive assessment of the Green Revolution's outcomes. Findings from the study reveal that while the Green Revolution initiative initially showed promise in increasing agricultural productivity and enhancing food production, its long-term impact on food security in Nigeria has been mixed. The research identifies various factors contributing to the success and challenges of the Green Revolution, including policy implementation, agricultural practices, socio-economic factors, and external influences. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of critically evaluating past agricultural policies and initiatives to inform future strategies for addressing food insecurity in Nigeria. While acknowledging the achievements of the Green Revolution, the research highlights the need for a holistic approach that addresses structural constraints, invests in rural development, promotes sustainable agricultural practices, and fosters inclusive growth. Based on the research findings, the study offers recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders to enhance food security in Nigeria. These include revitalizing agricultural extension services, promoting smallholder farmers' access to resources and technology, strengthening market linkages, investing in agribusiness development, and prioritizing nutrition-sensitive interventions.
