SUMMARY
This essay has examined explicitly how William Golding and Ayi Kwei Armah, two novelists of diverse backgrounds have used setting and symbols to treat various themes that border on humanity. In doing so, the essay made progress in the pursuit of its objective by examining how objects presented in the novels have been most useful in projecting various themes. For example, it examined the use of objects drawn from the two novels to symbolize order, decay, hope, etc in the societies presented. Before doing so, the eassy present setting of the selected texts, how it plays an important role as it captures issues like corruption and poverty in a post-colonial society and also, the evil nature of man in a lawless society. The essay has presented characters in the two novels as symbols of virtue and vices in the society, in association with their roles in the narratives.
