ABSTRACT

Serum biochemical indices provide information for evaluating nutritional status, performance and physiological state of farm animals to nutrient utilization. A 70-day study was conducted using 20 weaner pigs of average weight 10.67kg to determine the effects of graded Musarpoms on the serum parameters of the pigs. The pigs were divided into 5 groups of 4 each and randomly assigned to five treatments in a completely randomized design (CRD) with each animal in individual pen. The graded Musarpoms was included in the diets at 0, 30, 40, 50 and 60% levels. Feed and water were offered ad-libitum. Blood was collected from the ear lobe of each animal at the end of the study. The parameters measured were Glucose (mg/dL), Triglycerides (mg/dL), Total cholesterol (mg/dL), HDL (mg/dL), LDL (mg/dL), ALP (IU/L), ALT (IU/L), Total Bilirubin (mg/dL), AST (IU/L), Conj. Bilir. (mg/dL), Total Protein (g/dL), Albumin (g/dL), Globulin (g/dL), Na+ (mg/dL), K+ (mmol/L), HCO3 (mmol/L), Chlorides (mmol/L), Urea (mg/dL) and Creatinine (mg/dL). The results showed that parameters differed significantly (P<0.05) among treatment. The values were; Urea 26.00, 32.00 (mg/dL), 19.67, 28.32, 29.98, Creatinine 0.50, 0.47, 0.51, 0.20, 0.50 (mg/dL), ALP 253.00, 261.00, 371.30, 271.70 (IU/L), 332.30, ALT 65.00, 52.33, 59.00, 70.99, 62.33 (IU/L), AST 316.00, 255.00, 293.30, 211.30, 256.00 (IU/L), Total Bilirubin 0.41, 0.51, 0.23, 0.46, 0.43 (mg/dL), HDL 40.16, 43.29, 38.00, 37.00, 38.30 (mg/dL), LDL 44.21, 38.10, 24.67, 16.58, 21.10 (mg/dL). The result showed that incorporated Musarpoms into diets for weaner pigs at varies level post no effect to the animals.
