ABSTRACT
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by a virus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).This novel coronavirus has been circulating all over the world. It is now more vital than ever to assess disease surveillance methods among young people, especially in universities, due to the impact of COVID-19 on the global community. The goal of this study was to find out how common SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were among University of Benin students. Along with a cross-sectional survey on risk factors, symptoms, vaccination tendency, and sources of information on COVID-19, a study employing a rapid immunoassay test was developed and run from February 16th to March 15th of 2022 and from November 2nd to November 15th of 2022. We employed both the multiple randomised sample technique and the systematic sampling strategy. After randomly roaming throughout the University, we first chose the nth student we met (n=3). The places chosen for the study were Ekosodin back gate, Anatomy back gate,June 12 bus stop, outside the Halls of Residence, and the University main gate. The participant took a knowledge and aptitude test, and there were 16 subjects in the cross-sectional study sample. 100% of those who responded to the survey (591/591) took the test. Data from the cross-sectional study were collected using the Open Date Kit (ODK) App, allowing for real-time data transmission and assessment of data quality. These details comprised the sociodemographics, age, place of residence, and COVID-19 preventive methods of the student. To find IgG and IgM antiboides, the STANDARDTM Q COVID-19 IgM/IgG combo test (SD Biosensor) was used. The test has a standard specificity of 96.94% (95/98, 91.31%-99.36%) after 14 days following the onset of symptoms and a specificity of 95.75% (225/235, 95% Cl: 92.31-97.94%), according to the manufacturer
