ABSTRACT
Serial verb construction is a sequence of verbs, or verb phrases in a sentence in which there is no intervening conjunction. This study sets out to examine the serial verb construction in Etsako. The focus of this work is to investigate and examine the economy of derivation within the serial verb construction and to provide a unified account of the serial verb construction as a complex predicate in Etsako. The motivation of this work is based on the fact that Etsako is a minority language. By virtue of this, no much work has been done on the language. And amongst the little that has been done, none has addressed the issue of serial verb construction in Etsako. The major focus will be on the Etsako West dialect which is the standardized dialect of Etsako. This study employs operation merge and operation select of the minimalist program framework to slow the phenomenon of serial verb construction in Etsako. One of the findings, the study have made that in Etsako serial verb construction, the first verb determine the operational roles of all the other verbs in the construction. This study will be beneficial to the teaching and learning of the Etsako language.
