SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ SELF-EFFICACY IN COMPUTER LITERACY AND SELF DEVELOPMENT SKILLS IN IKPOBA-OKHA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACT

This study was on self-efficacy in computer literacy and self-development skills in IkpobaOkha Local Government Area of Edo state. The study was motivated by the increasing interest of teenagers in the use of computer systems and other ICT devices. The study seeks to find out self-assessment of students in computer literacy in acquiring developmental skills. Nine research questions were formulated to guide the study and six hypotheses were formulated. Descriptive survey research design was used for this study and data was collected using questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. Pearson Product Correlation and Fisher Z were used to test the hypotheses. Findings revealed high level of computer literacy among students; there was a significant relationship between computer literacy and self-development skills, there was a significant relationship between self-efficacy in computer literacy and self-development skills. There was a significant difference in relationship between computer literacy and selfdevelopment skills between male and female students. Furthermore, there was a difference in relationship between computer literacy and self-development skills by school type; there was no difference in relationship between self-efficacy in computer literacy and selfdevelopment skills between male and female students. Lastly, there was a difference in relationship between self-efficacy in computer literacy and self-development skills by school type. The recommendations include; equipping of public schools with computer laboratories and adequate computer systems; encouragement of students to use their knowledge of computer literacy to acquire skills; parents and guardians to guide their children and wards on good use of computer system; inclusion and specification of practical aspects in computer as a subject taught in schools by curriculum planners and teachers exposing and imparting their students with practical use of computer systems.
