ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to ascertain the senior secondary school student’s perception of the factors responsible for examination malpractice in chemistry in Egor local government area. To carry out this study, four (4) research questions were raised. The survey research design was adopted for the study.

The instrument used for gathering data from the selected sample was a questionnaire. The reliability of the student’s questionnaire was established at 0.77 using Cronbach Alpha method. A total of one hundred (100) secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area constituted the population study sample. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics percentages and mean.

The study revealed as follows that; poor method of teaching Chemistry, lack of Chemistry teachers in schools, poor study habits and laziness of students, fear of failing an examination and because their friends are involved in examination malpractice, are the factors responsible examination malpractice. The causes of examination malpractice occur due to poor inspection of examination, more emphasis on certificates. Lack basic understanding of the subject, country that becomes noted for examination malpractice losses international credibility, such country’s educational institutions are as good as dead as far as international cooperation in education is concerned. Use of large halls during examination, use of sitting arrangement during examination, proper supervision of examination and completion of the syllabus by teachers are the measures of curbing examination malpractice. Based on the findings, it was recommended that, all activities relating to examinations such as question paper production, invigilation, marking, result collation and computation should be handled with a high level of responsibility by those concerned. Let students be aware of possible penalties and sanctions against people who depart from the cherished values of the society.
