ABSTRACT
Language is one of the most important tools at man's disposal for shaping and dominating his environment. Man uses language in a variety of contexts and situations to provide information, influence attitudes, and maintain social relationships. Differences in vocabulary and style exist as a result of the diverse functions that language is called upon to perform. The purpose of this research is to conduct a semantic analysis of military language. The goal is to describe military language as a specialised variety with distinct characteristics. It examines the various special registers, and terms used in the Army setting and it explains their technical meanings which are different from the standard English. Primary and secondary sources were utilised for data collection. The primary source of data was through oral interviews of some military officers in Giwa Barracks in Ikoyi, Lagos State and from S&T barracks. Ugbowo Benin City. The secondary sources include text books, internet and some online posts. The findings show that the characteristics of Army parade language are quite distinct from all other varieties of language. The researcher concludes that parade language is unique as well as relevant to those in the military profession.
