Abstract
This paper explores the theme of self-preservation and survival in Mama America and Trapped in Oblivion. Survival and self-preservation are universal themes that touch the lives of men at one point or the other as humans are always fighting one battle or the other. Theodre Ifeoma and Azuka Monyei have both written books which focus on this theme. This work looks at how the main characters, Ajulu and Nnenna are affected by the will to survive and preserve themselves. This paper also examines what can happen to a person who chooses survival over giving up, who chooses to fight for themselves and what they believe in over letting others steal your voice and identity. The results range from death, anxiety and despair to disillusionment and freedom. Ajulu’s story is a solace for all who labour under delusion and despicable inhuman conditions. In the end, no good woman or man can be trampled on for long.
