ABSTRACT
A study on seed germination and growth of seedlings of Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg under different shade levels was conducted at the Department of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management nursery and arboretum in the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo state, Nigeria. Seeds of Artocarpus altilis were obtained from the Nigeria Institute for Oil-palm Research (NIFOR), Benin City, Nigeria. Topsoil was obtained from the forest nursery and a total of 180 polythene pots of dimension 13cm x 15cm, were filled with topsoil, distributed to three plots (light, medium and heavy shade) having 60 pots each and screened with mosquito nets, were used. Germination data were collected and analyzed, using descriptive statistics while calculations for germination parameters were done using commands from the ExcelProgram 2010. Growth data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA in a CRD design.
85% germinability was recorded in the light shade and 77% germinability in both the medium and heavy shade. From the ANOVA, there was significant difference in the effect of shade levels on seedlings growth. Based on the results, seed germination and seedling growth of the A. altilis is more favourable under the medium shade.
