ABSTRACT

Nigeria often referred to as the "Giant of Africa," grapples with a profound and persistent challenge to its stability and development – the Boko Haram insurgency. This conflict, which emerged in the early 2000s, is not merely a struggle for territorial control; it is deeply rooted in complex historical, religious, economic, and political factors. Founded by Mohammed Yusuf in Maiduguri, Boko Haram initially operated as a religious and educational movement, advocating a strict interpretation of Islam and opposing Western education. The insurgency's growth can be attributed to historical marginalization, high poverty rates, and limited access to basic services in Nigeria's northeastern region. Additionally, political instability, corruption, and ineffective governance have eroded public trust, driving some individuals towards extremist groups like Boko Haram. The insurgency capitalizes on Nigeria's religious and ethnic diversity, using existing tensions to further its divisive agenda.
