SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THEIR READING ABILITIES IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated secondary school students’ perception of their reading abilities in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, two research questions were raised and two hypotheses were tested. The research design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey research design. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred and eighty (180) respondents. The instrument used for the data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Students’ Perception of Their Reading Abilities Questionnaire (SPRAQ)”. The data were analyzed using mean score, standard deviation, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings from the study revealed that students do not differ in their perception of their reading abilities based on sex or class in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It was found out that there is a positive perception of students about their reading abilities. The study, among others, recommended that the government should ensure that the available school libraries in secondary schools are equipped with up-todate books in order to strengthen the reading ability of students
