ABSTRACT

 The study investigated school ownership, type and location as correlates of secondary school students’ academic performance in Mathematics in Udu local government area of Delta State. The purpose of the study is to establish if relationship exist between school ownership, type, location and students’ academic performance in Mathematics. To carry out this study three (3) research questions were raised and three (3) hypotheses were formulated.

The study adopted the survey research design of the correlational approach. The population of the study was made up of fourteen public secondary schools and eighty- three private secondary schools with a total of eight thousand three hundred and fifty-six students. A sample size of four hundred and sixteen students was selected from sixteen selected schools with 26 students from each of the selected schools. The instrument for data collection was a proforma which was face validated by the project supervisor and two experts from the department while the reliability was not established because the standardized scores used were obtained from W.A.E.C. The data collected were analyzed using point-biserial correlation and tested at 0.05 Alpha level of significance.

Findings from the study revealed that there is a significant correlation in students’ academic performance in Mathematics on the basis of school ownership, type and location. It was recommended that government should close the gap between the rural and urban location through the provision of social amenities, teacher incentives, adequate instructional materials; recruitment of qualified teachers to rural populace which will enhances better academic performance of students in their final examination like SSCE.
