SCHOOL FACILITIES UTILIZATION AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN EDO STATE PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

This study investigated school facilities utilization and students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Edo State. Six (6) research questions were raised and three (3) research questions were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The research design used for this study is the Ex-post facto and descriptive research design and content validity for the instruments was used for instrument validation. A sample of 68 schools selected from a population 136 public senior secondary schools across the seven (7) Local Government Areas in Edo South senatorial district was used in the study. Data was analyzed using mean, standard deviation, pearsons moment correlation and the Fisher Z to test for the hypotheses. the instrument used was students’ academic performance checklist (SAPC) and School facilities utilization checklist (SFUC). Results of the data analyzed showed that the availability and utilization of school facilities in the sampled schools were commendable as was shown in table seven (7) and Eight (8) were both high apart from some facilities like audio visual, toilets, school clinics, water storage tanks, music equipment and staff rooms that have low availability and utilization mean ratings. Also, the students’ academic performance was laudable as shown in table 6, 4024(67.7%) and 1924(32.3%). hypothesis 1 revealed a strong positive correlation between school facilities utilization and students’ academic, while from hypotheses 2 and 3 showed that there was no difference in the relationship between school facilities utilization and students’ academic performance based on school size and location. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among other things, that government within the senatorial district and by extension Edo state should make available and enforce compliance in school facilities utilization in order to enhance and sustain the laudable students’ academic performance in the State
