ABSTRACT
This study investigates “School Facilities and Academic Performance of Junior Secondary School Students in English Language, in Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State”. Data collected were analyzed using “test-re-test” method for the study. The population of the study consists of thirteen secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area with the total population of two thousand three hundred and fifty (2,350) students (both males and females). viii The research instrument used for the study was questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. “Section A” was designed to generate personal information of the respondents, While the “Section B” comprised of items on the topic under research. It was constructed with care to reflect the problem of the study such that the items would be relevant to the purpose of the study. The instrument was reviewed and certified by the project supervisor and two (2) other experts in Faculty of Education, all in University of Benin. Findings revealed that there are no adequate availability of facilities required for the teaching and learning of English Language in almost all schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area, of Edo State (both public and private schools). And there is obvious difference in the academic performance of students of schools where facilities are available and students in schools where facilities are not available. Based on these findings, the following were recommended; That the government and educationists are urged to put in place various school facilities and instructional aids that could help arouse the interest of secondary school students (especially the Junior arm), in English Language in both private and public schools. Also, the government ought to increase the funding for education so as to enable the procurement of necessary and adequate equipment for a proper Language Laboratory, and instructional materials in both public and private secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo state.
