SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND STUDENTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN PUBLIC JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the “Relationship between school environment and students’ academic achievement in public junior secondary schools in Oredo local government area of Edo state”: a case study of Edo State. Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study A sample size for this study was a total of 3 schools representing 20%constituted the sample size in Oredo local government are using simple random sampling procedure. The questionnaire was the major instrument used for the study and was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, simple percentages, and mean score. Findings of the study revealed that Public junior secondary school has enough classroom to accommodate students with , there is library with updated materials in this school , climate is conducive for learning, norms like punctuality is high recommendation , there are enough teachers to teach the students and that there are specialize subject teachers in the school, it was observed that there is no laboratories, teacher-student relationship, adequate training for teachers, and no subject counselor. It was concluded that students’ academic achievement in 2020/2021 BECE examination was with high achievement, and that majority of the students passed the examination. It was further recommended that Government and proprietors of schools should provide more laboratories, adequate training for teachers, subject counselor, and should ensure that students are not overcrowded in a particular classroom.
