ABSTRACT

The study focuses on the school community perception of the library as a hospitable environment for reading study and research in uniben demonstration secondary school (UDSS). The purpose of this study was to ascertain the students’ level of perception on how they see the library as a hospitable environment for reading study and research, to identify the students perception with the view of how university demonstration secondary school student see the library to investigate the level of constant usage of the library, to identify the problem facing the library that limits student access to the library A descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. The students of university demonstration senior secondary school was used for the study which consisted of 300 students from SS1 to SS3.   The sampling techniques used for the study was random sampling Techniques A questionnaire was designed and titled school community perception of the library as a hospitable environment for reading study and research questionnaire (SCPLHERSRQ) by the researcher and used for data collection. A total of 100 copies of questionnaire were administered and 100 copies were duly completed, returned and found useable for this study. The instrument was subjected to face validation by the supervisor.

The findings of the study shows that the level of student perception of the library as a hospitable environment for reading study and research (university demonstration secondary school) revealed the extent UDSS students use the school library for reading study and research, identify the perception of the school library as a hospitable environment for reading study and research in UDSS id positive, revealed the factors that affects reading study and research in your library in lack of conducive environment, inadequate power supply, noise from surrounding and other class rooms and unavailability of current materials to carry our research in Uniben demonstration secondary school.   Recommendations was made based on the findings from the study which state that provision of standby generators for content power supply should be made available, fans, air conditioners for proper ventilation should be on standby up to date materials should be acquired to promote research trading of staffs to be more receptive and Customer Friendly Provision of internet availability to promote research and improve in their knowledge.
