ABSTRACT
This study investigated School Administrators Responsibilities as Correlates of Administrative Effectiveness in Secondary Schools in Edo South Senatorial District. Seven research questions were raised. One of them were answered directly, while six were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 Alpha Level of Significance.
The study employed survey research design. The researcher adopted questionnaire survey in the collection of data for the study. However, the researcher got some information for this work through Internet especially when occasion called for it. The population of the study comprised 786 secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District. The population is the group of interest to the researcher, i.e. the group he would like the results of the study to generalizable (Gay,1987). The 786 secondary schools in Edo South Senatorial District constituted the universe of this study. The target population is five (5) Secondary Schools in four Local Government Areas, in Edo South Senatorial District. The sample was 20 Public Secondary Schools from were respondents were drawn in five Local Government Areas in Edo South Senatorial District. Twenty Principals of Public Secondary Schools and their Teachers were selected for the sample. The researcher employed Proportionately Stratified Random Sampling to pick five Local Government Areas in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State. Simple random sampling technique was used to pick the Public Secondary Schools by ballot. Furthermore, simple random sampling techniques were used to pick the teachers which was not less than 10 per cent of the total number of teachers in each school sampled. Two (2) research instruments were used for data collection for this study. They were questionnaire. The first questionnaire was titled “Teachers’ Questionnaire on Administrative Effectiveness of School Administrator”. While the second questionnaire was titled: “Teachers’ Questionnaire on Functions of School Administrator”. The questionnaire was divided into two parts. Part A and B. Part A sought bio-data of the respondents. Part B consisted of item-statements from School Administrators Responsibilities as Correlates of Administrative Effectiveness. All the items of the questionnaire were measured using a four-point Likert rating scale of Strongly Agree (4), Agree (3), Disagree (2) and Strongly Disagree (1). The first instrument contained 26 items while the second instrument contained 31 items respectively. In testing the Reliability of the Instrument, the Cronbach’s Alpha method was used to ascertain the measure of internal consistency of the instruments. The coefficients obtained for “Teachers’ Questionnaire on Administrative Effectiveness of School Administrator” was .736 and “Teachers’ Questionnaire Responsibilities of School Administrator” was .709. These shew that the items in the scales measured were very reliable. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics (Means and Standard Deviation) for the research questions while Pearson’s correlation was used to test the hypotheses at alpha level= 0.05.
