SATISFACTION WITH NURSING CARE AMONG MOTHERS OF UNDER-5 IN PEDIATRIC WARDS

ABSTRACT

Patient satisfaction has been recognized as a critical component of healthcare quality, with the potential to impact patient outcomes and the overall effectiveness of healthcare systems. Patient satisfaction research focuses on understanding patients’ experiences and perceptions of healthcare services, including factors that contribute to or detract from their satisfaction. Improving patient satisfaction has been linked to improved adherence to treatment, increased patient engagement, and better health outcomes. Thus, understanding patient satisfaction is essential for healthcare providers and policymakers to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes. This research study aims to assess the level of satisfaction with nursing care received among mothers of under-5 in paediatric wards of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City. A descriptive survey design was adopted in this study and the study’s population comprised of 120 mothers across paediatric wards using convenient sampling technique. A self-structured questionnaire was used to get data from the respondents which was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and yielded a reliability score of 0.81 during the pilot study. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentage and means were used to analyze the data obtained while Chi-square statistics was used to test the stated hypotheses of the study. The result from the study shows that a majority 60% of the respondents had good satisfaction while 40% had poor satisfaction due to ‘the caring behaviour of nurses’ which was the highest factor that affected the nursing care received. Also, the moderately high level of satisfaction was due to the nurses ‘help in managing their children’s medication’ which was identified by the mothers as the most area of care they were satisfied with.
