ABSTRACT

This research study investigates the potential of social media as a tool for promoting peace and resolving conflicts, with a specific focus on the Nigerian Army and UNIBEN students clash in 2023. The study aims to explore the various ways in which social media platforms were utilized during the conflict, as well as their impact on peace building efforts. The methodology employed in this research study involved the use of a questionnaire, which was carefully designed and modified based on feedback from experts in the field. The collected data was analyzed using quantitative methods, which includes the simple percentage formula and frequency tables. The research questions addressed in this study formed the basis for the findings, as the study found out that Social media is an essential peace building tool that facilitated intergroup contact and reduced prejudice between different groups, It also served as a platform for promoting dialogue and understanding, thereby contributing to the resolution of conflicts, etc. However, the study discovered that social media is prone to the spread of misinformation and hate speech, which can exacerbate conflicts. Conclusively, the study highlights the significant role of social media in peace and conflict resolution, specifically in the context of the Nigerian Army and UNIBEN students’ clash in 2023. The findings also emphasized the importance of utilizing social media platforms strategically and responsibly to promote intergroup contact, mobilize support for peaceful actions, and mitigate the spread of misinformation and hate speech. These insights can inform policymakers, peace building organizations, and individuals involved in conflict resolution efforts, on how to leverage social media for effective peace building in Nigeria and beyond.
