Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to examine the roles of religion on Itsekiri traditional ceremonies. This study reviewed works of several authors. To guide the study, threer research questions were raised which are outlined thus:What are the roles of Religion on tradition marriage among Itsekiri people? What are the roles of Religion on Burial rites among Itsekiri people? To what extent has Religion affected ceremonies among Itsekiri people? The sample for the study consists of two hundred (200) residents which are selected using simple random samping technique. A questionnaire comprising 20(twenty) items was the instrument used in the research which helped drew the data. The validity and reliability data obtained was analyzed using frequency, counts, and simple percentages.
Finding revealed thatMarriage among the Itsekiri people helps in transmission of culture. It was revealed that Religion and Traditional marriage among the Itsekiri serve as honour and dignity to the couple and family members. It was shown that Religion and Traditional marriage among the Itsekiri promote moral uprightness in their society. It was seen that Legitimate Children are born to the family through marriage among the Itsekiri people. It was revealed that religion plays important roles on traditional marriage. It was recommended that Marriage among the Itsekiri people should help in transmission of culture.it was recommended Religion and Traditional marriage among the Itsekiri should serves as honour and dignity to the couple and family member.
